Evaluation

In what ways does your Media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I think that my music magazine follows the basic conventions, I found these conventions by looking at a selection of music magazines (for different genres and age ranges) and non music magazines (to get conventions of magazines in general). My magazine cover contains characteristics such as a masthead, an issue number, article subheadings, an edited self taken photograph and a headline. However, the only convention I have challenged and not used on my front cover is a bar code and price, which I have decided I would like to be on the back page of my magazine (like a book). I feel these small changes to my magazine make it stand out, also like my use of non digital and only film camera images. The contents page however, is slightly more conventional in layout and basic colour. This page includes self explanatory article titles, page numbers, captioned photographs and some brief paragraphs about the issue and article content

How does your Media product represent particular social groups?
Alike my influence magazines, Vice I-D and NME; my magazine represents students and young adults who are involved in subculture music scenes but also in a mix of art and fashion. In my magazine; high saturated, distorted pictures. These photographs mainly portray young adults (17-24) looking happy, relaxed, crude (for example; contents photograph of a tattooed boy making a 'rude' gesture) or even excited and 'wild' (i.e. contents picture of a drunk boy pulling a face). The magazine portrays the care free attitude and side to students, young adults and bands/artists alike, showing a window into their lives which involves music, parties, subcultures, alcohol, fashion and art. The models in my photographs are shown to have fashionable yet casual clothing, interesting haircuts, piercings, tattoos and pose pulling faces and gestures. this is a magazine for the 'skins' generation. By using gritty and raw images taken on Polaroid and Disposable photographs (which were scanned onto the computer) I feel these make my magazine more realistic and appeal more to the represented audience.

What kind of Media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Alike my influence magazines and also from inspiration from Independent Music ‘Zines’ (which are on music events/bands, usually hand made and ran by one or two people, for example DEAD AND GONE: http://www.deadandgonerecords.com who are an independent record label). I feel as this is not a mainstream genre or style of magazine I don’t think it would be in confectionary shops or supermarkets like NME. As this magazine reflects on subcultures, I think that alike Vice, I would distribute from Skateboarding/Extreme Sports shops, Independent Boutiques/Clothing Companies advertised within the magazine and on the Internet. If the magazine became popular, eventually I would decide, like most other magazines, to look into being sold in chain stores such as ASDA and WHSMITH. To make buying the magazine online appeal, I would offer 6 or 12 month subscriptions with a ‘free offer’ alike most mainstream magazines. For example “subscribe for 6 months and get two issues FREE”.Who would be the audience for your Media product?I think my audience would be people aged 17-24. The magazine looks at well-liked and underground music, but also mixes these things with art and fashion which are things of common interest with most people into the genres of music portrayed in the issue (electro) and age (students). The language used in my magazine uses a lot of contemporary words and slang, which can easily be associated to and understood by young adults who have grown up with NME and VICE, which uses similar content to my magazine. By using the language of the audience, they will feel in turn understood and involved within the magazine.

How did you attract/address your audience?
In terms of the front cover, which is the first thing the audience notices; I feel I attracted my audience with mainly the interesting photographs and headings. I used contrasting colours and interesting fresh styled fonts, which I edited in size order to what I felt were more important (i.e. heading, sub headings, article references, date, price etc). I used catchy phrases which arises questions in the audiences head. when asking a friend what they first thought at the story title 'bigger than hip-hop', friends automatically asked 'what’s bigger than hip hop?'. This is the reaction hoped for; I feel makes the reader want to read on and find out. I used a photograph of a fashionable, yet offhandedly dressed boy drinking beer and pulling faces/shouting as the main picture. I believe this picture relates to the fun attitude of most young adults. When asking friends what is the first thing they noticed, 3/5 said the picture and 2/5 said the title. When asked why, comments included "I noticed the picture first because it's the biggest thing on the page, it stands out. The boy looks to be having fun and it made want to look at the rest of the page" and “I just really like the font, looks really futuristic. Like it’s supposed to be because it’s an electro magazine”.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
I have learnt a wide range of new skills whilst constructing this form of media. I have mainly acquired these by using programmes I was not very familiar with, such as Microsoft Publisher and Adobe Photoshop. I have learnt to layout using Publisher and taught myself how to increase the margins to make all of my pages the same size. Asides from this I have learnt how to edit photographs to make them suit the context of the magazine, and how colour schemes, fonts and layout can change the attitude and representation completely. For instance, my magazine before using Adobe Photoshop were standard colours, until I used photograph tints to give everything a turquoise tint to make the colours flow and suit better through the magazine. I feel these skills will help me greatly within my media course, first and second year.

Looking back at the preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
I feel that by creating a college magazine as the preliminary task, it has evolved my understanding of magazine conventions and made it easier to build my music magazine successfully. By creating a college magazine, I now understand and am more confident with experimenting with layouts, colour schemes, photographs and writing in itself; which I found as a struggle when I first began the preliminary task (College Magazine).

colour adjustments of contents page and cover. & DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD PAGES

Page number 2 of double page spread

page number one of double page spread (above)

Contents page:

my cover and contents are pretty different, the cover has bold colours and my contents is pretty plain, so i have put the contents into photo shop and adjusted colour levels, contrast and sharpness to make the colours more bold. as its the electro issue i want to use strange colours

FINISHED CONTENTS PAGE

I wanted my contents page to be clear and easy to follow. I used light grey for the page numbers and dark grey for the page titles. I think this makes it easier to see where the pages and divided up and easier to read. I have used three pictures. one is a set of Polaroid’s I’ve taken at festivals and nights out to tie in with the 'festival guide' story. I have included a photograph as my friend jack, naming the story 'blck jck' (short for black jack') and also a photograph of myself and a friend in a bar with a quote said by us and the page number beside. Originally I was going to put "in this month" down the side of the page, however as I did this last time I felt I should vary with layouts. i put "in this month" at the top and a tag line underneath to tie in with the main genre covered for the month, which is electro. "bros hoes & sweet sweet electro!"
I’ve used modern slang to make it attractive and appealing, yet understandable by a certain age group. my target audience is 17 – 25.

Change of issue cover and photographs taken for new cover/contents/double page spread

After looking back at my cover for my music issue and start of my double page spread I didn't feel pleased with it and decided to start it again. This is my final front cover. I felt it should look modern and attractive instead of crowded like Kerrang and NME. I took the look of vice magazine, which is simple yet effective. the photograph I used is from a disposable camera, giving it a raw edgy look that vice has. Adding to this, I thought because I decided for this issue to be on electro, I used futuristic fonts and colours. I’m going to do the contents and double page spread in similar colours and style.

Photographs i have taken for this issue, i wanted to take photographs using a disposible camera and polaroid camera as well as some digital to give the photos a more raw and realistic appearence. These show teenagers/young adults having fun and looking care free. I used to college scanners to upload these photographs and then used photoshop to adjust contrast and colour:

Contents Page Draft, Double Page Spread Draft & Finished Cover: finished january 12th, posted late

i stuck to the idea of simple yet affective as i did with my cover, taking inspiration from Vice & I-Ds simple yet modern layouts. i want to use a white background, black text (except for the side title which will match the front pages colour scheme) and good pictures to match my stories. As well as this i decided to advertise a festival and also a subscription offer at the top of my contents to add to the realism of it. By using simple layouts but effective text and layouts, i think it will make it alot more eye catching and contemporary.

Layout Ideas, Font/Colour Scheme ideas and Music Magazine Analysing. (Double Page Spreads, Contents and Front Cover)

Layout ideas (above)

Colour Schemes and Font Experimenting (above)

(The work in this entry was completed between December 20th - Early January 2009, Due to computer problems, this has been blogged late.)

In this blog i have included magazine analysis' and my layout designs for my front cover (first picture of the blog entry.)

Front Page Analysis

Earlier in my blog, i have analysed music magazines such as NME ( http://wykeemilymaetobin.blogspot.com/2008/10/in-media-we-have-been-looking-at.html )
and I-D magazine ( http://wykeemilymaetobin.blogspot.com/2008/11/magazine-analysis-2-done-october-2008.html - second magazine). I will be using those two as influences in my magazine, however, to vary my range of research on music magazines, i have also analysed Rolling Stone, VICE (which has a record company, i think will be handy for further research in the music industry) and Q magazine:

ROLLING STONE:
Rolling Stone magazine which covers Music Artists and Events. Usually includes more well known and successful artists. On the front cover the tag line reads ‘An Intimate Visit, BRUCES DREAM’. The words in the main tag line don’t include any slang which makes me think that perhaps the magazine is aimed at a more mature audience. The cover is simplistic and not too crowding for the eyes, which gives me many ideas on layout for my music magazine. The main photo is centred at the bottom, 3 subtitles at the very top of the page for other stories and the magazine name underneath.
I think this magazine is for the older audience and not so much teenagers. The target audience for Rolling Stone, I think is mid 20’s + as there seems to be older and more established bands and artists appearing in it. I think this magazine represents more classic bands and artists, from Rock to Indie, but probably not pop or R&B from the style.

Analysis of Content Pages
(i have gotten my sources from the Internet, the following contents pages have been saved from google, i searched 'content pages')
'Drummer' Magazine:

The contents layout is moderately simple. Like most content pages, it includes photographs that represent an article, These photographs are captioned with the page numbers of the articles, making it easy for the reader to recognise a band/artist they like, and then be able to go straight to the article. Usually content pages include a large photograph that links to the cover story (which usually attracts audience to buy).

At the top of the page it has the name of the magazine, and the date of the issue with "contents"

underneath has features with numbers which are red and text that is black. this makes it easier to separate the storeys and easier on the eyes. under neath the months contents, it has the monthly articles such as album reviews which are in every issue. This has been headed as "regulars".

the background is white, which i find good as it doesn't make the text hard to read and makes the page look less crowded. I think I will base my contents on this magazines.

Double Page Spread

NME:
this double page spread covers on a band called The Teenagers from Paris. The left/first page has a large photo of the band with a "Need To Know" box in the bottom corner with quick facts about the band. The colour scheme is all Blue and white. At the top hand of the page has 'Radar' which is their monthly focus on a band. The Title is "The Teenagers" which covers the two pages at the top, overlapping the photograph of the band. On the right/second page, it has the story on the teenagers, with a quote from a band member in the middle of the page. This in music magazines in usally a humorous or something dramatic/shocking they have said. This stands out, and grabs the readers attention. This then leads the reader to want to read on! The background is white which makes the text easy and readable. At the side of the article is a every ones talking about section about bands the artists like. I think this is pretty interesting as usually double page spreads focus on the artist and not other bands.

I like the idea of the first page being a photograph and second being the article. i will bare in mind this for my double page spread.
