magazine analysis & evaluation.

click photograph to enlarge image which the analysis for my magazine cover. and again below for contents.

Evaluation:
I think, personally my magazine went well for a first attempt at creating my own publication. I used Picasa which is a google image manipulation program to edit my work and put the front page together. For my contents, i used paint. I took all my photographs on a digital camera and the front cover photograph was taken in the town center of two friends. I tinted the photo with yellow to match the colour scheme of the writing better. I used basic magazine conventions, a main photograph, other article subtitles, issue number and attractive slogans. If i could change anything it would be my contents page. because i did it on paint due to lack of time i don't think it looks as well put together as my front cover. For my next magazine i will use the same programms and try to colour scheme and lay them out better.

Magazine Analysis 2 (done october 2008, transferred from word document in Nov)

magazine 2 'U.S Time Magazine'

L-language
The layout has the other articles advertised at the very top of the magazine which is fairly unusual as they are usually displayed at the sides in the middle of the magazine. below 'TIME' (the title) in red times new roman font is shown with the main picture underneith/behind with the main article headline at the side. this says "WHY OBMAMA COULD BE THE NEXT PRESIDENT", with 'The Next President' in bigger bolder writing. this catches the audiences attention and tells them its going to be on elections/politics. At the top, the adverts state about 'nuclear rogues' and 'clients take on heroes'. Again this gives the impression of relivant and more mature topics that are going to be covered in the magazine.
The colours of the magazine are greys/reds/blacks and the main picture. this is clear and easy to follow. it also doesnt get too much for the eye.

I-institution
TIME magazine U.S. Which covers Politics, world news, tech reviews, health, science and entertainment news

I-ideology
From the front cover, if you have a knowledge of U.S politics, that the cover is of the new president elect, Barack Obama. This makes the reader know that this magazine covers relivant issues. Not to mention that Obama is the first Black president, which has caused much talk. When he won the U.S 2008 election, people said this was a 'historical moment'.
This also makes the reader think (if they have prior knowledge) that the magazine article will be in depth and probably for the more educated person.

A-audience
I think this is aimed at older people. however, in america the elections are very important to everyone who can vote. I think this magazine would be aimed at 18 to atleast 50, as the older person would probably find politics and world events. as a younger person would probably more appealed to, for example vogue etc.

R-representation
Represents American issues, politics, world news, relivent topics, tech reviews, health, science and entertainment news

magazine 3. London 'i-D magazine'

L-language
The layout of this is similar to the NME layout. the title however is displayed in the same corner but verically down the left side. The colour is a light bright yellow which contrasts well towards the main picture, which is used as the full background. there are no other article adverts, just the title and subtitles which say "MIA" on the left hand side, and "LOUDER THAN BOMBS" in the same colour and font (just bigger) at the bottom. louder then bombs is a fairly bold statement and gives many ideas as to what the magazine would cover topic wise. look at 'ideology' for my thoughts on this
I-institution
i-D magazine, a london based fashion/political/music magazine
I-ideology
those who have read the magazine before will know what the topics are, but as a first time viewer of the cover i would think it gives the impression that the topics are politics, but also music and fashion. those who know who the women on the front is will know that she is a singer called 'MIA'. this makes those who know who she is, think the magazine will be about music. but also as she sings about quite political things, the title ties in. bombs being something used in wars, but also the reference to louder, making the audience think, she is louder than bombs. i think its tied into fashion because of her pose and the way the picture is photographed. she is dressed and looks nice, but also the picture shows her covering her left eye. this is a common pose on every i-D cover. this makes the magazine recognisable and memorable.
A-audience
I think this is aimed at people ages 18 and up. although it is a music/fashion magazine, it covers rellivant issues such a politics, world events etc which i think anyone under a certain age would not appriciate as much.
R-representation
politics, fashion, music, subculture

Magazine Analysing

L-language
The layout of the magazine is fairly normal, although the title is at the top though, it is in the right hand corner. the title of the main article also is quite far to the top which says “Fucked Up” “The beating heart of the underground”. This is in clear white font which contrasts well with the darker background, it is understandable and clear to read. At the bottom in quote marks by a band member, prefrebly the band member who is on the cover. Stating “our shows are orgies of destruction”. This gives the impression theyre a punk/hardcore/rock band because of the use of descriptive hars words used.

I-institution
NME. Music Magazine of currently popular artists

I-ideology
The message of this magazine mainly looks as if its about music, mainly genres which are not mainstream. Usual mainstream pop artists are well groomed and have a stereotyped look. However this picture shows a man who’s half naked, covered in blood, with tattoos holding a piece of raw meat.

A-audience
I think this is aimed at younger people and those into subcultures and music genres which are not so mainstream. Because of the words used, such as profanity and ‘orgies’, I feel as though this magazine is for people aged 16/17 +

R-representation
Represents subculture things like tattoos, music

Textual Analysis of "Secondary Teachers Magazine" Front Cover

As this is the start of the Foundation Portfolio Preliminary Task we looked at how the media key concepts could be applied to produce a college magazine. We used the acronym LIIAR - Language, Institution, Ideology, Audience and Representation.

L-language
The layout of the magazine is fairly standard, there is 3 small subtitles at the top and the title is below in centre in large font. the font of the text is like Arial, clear and easy to read in green/blue. This makes it attractive, yet understandable. The photograph is in colour and directly under the title. The photo shows two school pupils of different races, sat together with school books. This gives the feel of mixed cultures being together. And behind them is two football style shirts with ‘numeracy’ and ‘literacy’ above. This gives the idea of opposites being together.

I-institution
Wyke College, Wyke achieves the best results, more students from the East Riding than Hull, Achedmic College.

I-ideology
The message this magazine gives out is mainly an educational one. Again from the picture it shows children smiling sat with books, this gives the idea that learning is ‘fun’ and shouldn’t be boring. Also the bright colours make this attractive to read. The subtitles use words like ‘great’ and ‘need to know’ which makes the reader drawn in.

A-audience
Students at Wyke College, staff at the college, age group of students (16-19), 64% females at the college, 36% males at the college, students mainly from Hull and surrounding areas, universities, employee’s of the college.

R-representation
Representing the college, the photograph’s, type of angles, stories, lead story, promoting the college, how your text font and photograph represent your story.
